1.Specified Skilled Worker (SSW)

Overview
The Specified Skilled Worker (SSW) program was launched by the Japanese government in April 2019 to address serious labor shortages in 16 critical industries. It allows foreign nationals with relevant skills and Japanese language ability to live and work in Japan.

Key Benefits

  • Valid for up to 5 years under SSW Type 1
  • Potential to transition to SSW Type 2 in some sectors, allowing for permanent residency and family reunification
  • Workers are allowed to change employers within the same sector

Eligibility Criteria

  • Must pass Japanese Language Test (JFT-Basic or JLPT N4 equivalent)

2.Technical Intern Training Program (TITP)

Overview
The Technical Intern Training Program (TITP) was introduced in 1993 to help developing countries acquire industrial and technical skills that can be transferred back home. It is a skill-building program—not a labor migration path—intended to train participants in Japan for a set period.

Key Benefits

  • Duration: 1 to 3 years (extendable to 5 years)
  • Trainees work under the supervision of Japanese companies
  • Can transition to specified skilled worker visa after training.
  • Monthly stipend and housing provided
  • Certificate of completion awarded

Eligibility Criteria

  • Basic Japanese language understanding recommended
  • Age: Typically 18 to 35 years
  • Good physical and mental health
  • Willingness to return to home country after training
  • Selected through approved sending organizations
